Is camouflage therapy reimbursed?

As a skin therapist and owner of Medicadermis, I often get the question: "Is camouflage therapy reimbursed?" The answer depends on the medical indication, the chosen treatment method and your policy conditions. Because insurers differ in this, I will list the most important points for you.

Safe, evidence-based treatment methods

At Medicadermis I work exclusively with proven, scientifically proven techniques. I am affiliated with the Dutch Association of Skin Therapists (NVH) and the Quality Register for Paramedics (KP). In this way I guarantee professional care according to the highest quality standards, with transparency and reliability as a starting point.

What is camouflage therapy?

Camouflage therapy reduces visible color differences in the skin, for example in:

  • Redness, couperose and rosacea
  • Hyperpigmentation, melasma or sun damage
  • Discoloration due to inflammation or loss of pigment

Application forms

  • Medical camouflage products & lessons: you will learn how to apply the right products yourself for natural coverage.
  • Light and laser treatments: reduce disruptive vascular structures or pigment deposits.
  • Dermatography (medical tattoo): long-term neutralization of color differences with a pigmented tattoo.

More information about our complete medical camouflage therapy including products can be found here .

Reimbursement for camouflage therapy with make-up & lessons

  • Supplementary insurance: often one-off or up to approximately €100–€250 per year
  • Limitations: Usually only for face and neck
  • Referral: sometimes required from GP or specialist
  • Condition: treatment by a KP-registered skin therapist or ANBOS specialist

Please note: this is not reimbursed by basic insurance (considered cosmetic).

Reimbursement for light and laser treatments

  • Basic insurance: only for medical reasons (e.g. congenital vascular abnormality or severe rosacea)
  • Supplementary insurance: some insurers reimburse treatment through a recognized skin therapist

Not reimbursed if:

  • There is no medical indication
  • You choose a non-contracted healthcare provider
  • Your policy excludes laser therapy

Dermatography reimbursement (medical tattoo)

  • Basic insurance: in case of medical necessity, such as nipple reconstruction after mastectomy
  • Supplementary insurance: sometimes (partially) for scar camouflage or pigment disorders

Not reimbursed if:

  • There is no medical necessity (purely cosmetic)
  • The treatment takes place with a non-contracted healthcare provider
  • Your health insurer excludes dermatography

How do you avoid surprises?

  • Always check the policy conditions of your supplementary insurance
  • Please inquire in advance whether you need a referral
  • Choose a recognized practitioner (NVH and KP registered)
