Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

At Medicadermis we work with advanced IPL technology that is able to treat various dermatological skin indications. Various filters can be used during an IPL treatment. These filters all reach a different depth in the skin and therefore have a different purpose. This means that the IPL treatment can be used for blood vessels (vascular), pigment disorders, hair reduction and acne reduction.

Who is the treatment suitable for?
The treatment can be applied to vascular disorders, including rosacea (dilated vessels), spider nevus, rosacea, diffuse redness, besenreiser and port-wine stains. In addition, the IPL can also be used for pigment spots, hair reduction and acne reduction.

During treatment for vascular disorders, the filter to be used is first chosen. This depends on the indication. Before the treatment begins, the eyes are covered with glasses. Gel is applied for conduction and the treatment can begin. During the treatment, pulses are placed on the area to be treated. These pulses provide energy that is converted into heat in the red color of the blood. The heat damages the protein structures in the vessel walls, causing the vessels to contract and the body to clean up the shriveled vessels. Depending on the filter chosen, the heat can also be absorbed into pigment and, if present, it is possible that this will be reduced during the treatment.

During treatment for pigment disorders, the first choice is made which filter will be used. Before the treatment begins, the eyes are covered with glasses. Gel is applied to the area to be treated for guidance. During the treatment, pulses are placed on the area to be treated. The pulses deliver energy to the pigmented cells, which are heated. Heating causes damage to the pigment cells and causes the cells to die. The spots will first turn darker, after which they will gradually flake off the skin with normal exfoliation, which will take between 7-10 days. The surrounding skin remains intact.

Both treatments can be tolerated by most people without anesthesia. When a pulse is applied, it feels like warm pricks or like rubber bands being shot against the skin. After the treatment, you can cool immediately with a cold pack.

After how many treatments do you see results?
Depending on the indication, an average of 3-5 treatments are required for vascular and 1-3 treatments for pigment to achieve optimal results. The treatments have an interval of 4-6 weeks. Naturally, new spots can develop over time under the influence of aging, lifestyle (alcohol, sun, etc.).

We understand that all the choices we offer online can be difficult. And that sometimes you just need advice in addition to the information we share online. Our skin therapist is then ready to help you. Please feel free to contact us for a no-obligation consultation in the Medicadermis Skin Therapy practice. But an accessible contact in the form of a free video consultation is of course also possible.

Before and after

Advice for treatment

  • Before the treatment, you must stay out of the sun for at least 4 weeks in the area to be treated. If you go outside, you must use an SPF, at least a factor of 30. If you are tanned, it is better to wait a few weeks before using the laser treatments until your original skin color returns. If this advice is not followed, the risk of complications is higher. If in doubt, it is better to reschedule the appointment.
  • This also applies to the use of self-tanner or tanning spray in the period before/between treatments.
  • If you often suffer from cold sores, it is advisable to start with prophylaxis against Herpes Simplex (cold sores) before treatment. You should start this one day before the treatment and complete the treatment.
  • No professional chemical peeling, laser treatment or microdermabrasion 4 weeks prior to the treatment.
  • Stop using peeling home products 2 weeks prior to the treatment.

Advice after treatment

  • After the treatment, the area is cooled. If necessary, cooling at home can be done with a cold washcloth or cold pack.
  • The treated area may be red and swollen for up to three days.
  • Do not apply any closing creams, make-up, deodorants or body lotions to the treated area for the first 24 hours after treatment for either treatment, so that the heat can escape from the skin.
  • During treatment for vascular disorders, do not drink alcohol, take a hot shower or sauna for 24 hours after treatment. This is related to vasodilation.
  • Do not scrub or peel the skin for 7 days after the treatment.
  • After treatment, protect the skin daily with a good SPF, at least factor 30.
  • Spicy food, smoking and UV radiation influence the development of vascular and pigment disorders. These factors must be taken into account to maintain the achieved result and prevent new spots.
