Skin tightening in The Hague
Treating skin aging in The Hague
Do you notice that your skin feels less firm, that fine lines are becoming more visible, or that your skin is gradually losing its fresh appearance? Skin aging is a natural process, but the way this manifests varies greatly from person to person. Not only does age play a role, but also factors such as sun exposure, skin type, lifestyle, and previous skin conditions.
At Medikadermis, I therefore look not only at what is visible on the surface, but specifically at the quality and condition of the skin as a whole. Drawing on my background as a skin therapist, I assess which changes are most prominent and which approach is appropriate.
Do you want to know what is possible for your skin? Then you can opt for a consultation at the practice or for an accessible video consultation.
Because scars are associated with changes in collagen and skin structure, treatments aimed at skin firming and collagen building can be a valuable addition. Read more about the possibilities within the LIFT Collection by Medicadermis.
Is skin aging solely age-related?
Skin aging is viewed in the scientific literature as a multifactorial process. A distinction is made between intrinsic aging, which is associated with age and genetic factors, and extrinsic aging, which is strongly influenced by external factors such as UV radiation, air pollution, and lifestyle.
This means that skin ages not only due to time, but primarily due to the extent to which it is exposed to external stimuli. Chronic sun exposure plays a major role in this and is considered one of the most important factors in visible skin aging.
What happens in the skin during aging?
Various structures in the skin change over time. Collagen and elastin, the proteins that provide firmness and resilience, gradually decrease and change in quality. This leads to a loss of elasticity and the appearance of fine lines and sagging.
In addition, the amount of extracellular matrix in the skin decreases and collagen fibers become fragmented. As a result, the skin loses its supporting structure and is less able to repair itself.
Elastic fibers also change over time. They become less organized and lose their resilience, contributing to skin that feels less supple and does not spring back as well.
Why skin can look older
What we perceive as skin aging is usually a combination of multiple factors. Fine lines and wrinkles are caused by changes in collagen and elastin, while pigment spots and an uneven complexion are often associated with sun exposure and inflammatory processes in the skin.
Vascular changes can also play a role. The skin may appear redder or duller due to changes in blood circulation and skin structure. Additionally, a decrease in hydration causes the skin to look less plump and smooth, making fine lines more visible.
Various characteristics of skin aging
Fine lines and wrinkles
Fine lines are caused by a combination of reduced skin thickness, a decrease in collagen, and repetitive muscle movements. As the skin loses its elasticity, these lines become more visible.
Reduced firmness
Skin that feels less firm is often related to changes in dermal structure and a decrease in collagen production. This can manifest as sagging skin or less contour.
Dry skin
As we age, the skin's natural hydration decreases. As a result, the skin can feel drier and look less supple.
Sun damage (photoaging)
Chronic exposure to UV radiation leads to accelerated skin aging. This is described in the literature as photoaging and is accompanied by wrinkles, pigment spots, and structural changes.
Age spots
Pigment spots such as lentigo solaris are caused by prolonged sun exposure and are a visible sign of extrinsic aging.
What can treatments do for the skin?
Treatments for skin aging do not focus on 'stopping' the aging process, but on improving skin condition and supporting skin repair.
Techniques such as microneedling, chemical peels, and light & Laser therapies are based on scientifically proven treatment principles, such as those used in dermatology and skin therapy. They focus on skin renewal and activating processes in the deeper skin layers that contribute to collagen production and improvement of skin structure. In addition, proper skincare, with clear instructions for home use, remains essential for a lasting result.
Additionally, IPL and laser treatments can be used to reduce pigment and vascular components, making the skin appear more even. Chemical peels, such as TCA peels, focus more on controlled exfoliation and stimulating cell renewal. In this way, these treatments each contribute, at their own level, to a more refined skin texture, greater evenness, and a calmer appearance.
Do you find treatments daunting? A gentler approach is also possible.
Not everyone feels immediately comfortable with more intensive treatments such as laser therapy or a TCA peel. That is perfectly understandable. If you want to do something about your skin but prefer a gradual build-up, this can be taken into account during the treatment. At Medicadermis in The Hague, it is possible to opt for a more gradual skin therapy course, tailored to your skin, your needs, and your pace. The road to results is often a bit longer, but even with a gentler approach, the skin can improve in a beautiful and responsible way.
The goal of these treatments is to improve skin texture, evenness, and radiance.
My vision on skin aging
In my article the lifeguard of authentic aging I describe how I view skin aging: not as something that must be fought, but as a process that you can guide.
It is not about changing who you are, but about supporting the skin so that it remains healthy, calm, and balanced.
