Removing cherry angioma with IPL or laser
Removing cherry angioma with IPL or laser
Cherry angioma removal with IPL or Nd:YAG laser in The Hague
Do you have a small, bright or dark red bump on your skin that you find cosmetically bothersome? Once it has been determined that it is a benign cherry angioma, targeted vascular treatment may be an option.
At Medikadermis I work with the Lumenis M22. Depending on the skin condition, I can choose IPL with vessel filter or the Multi-Spot Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm). Which technique is appropriate depends, among other things, on the size, color, thickness, and location of the vascular lesion, and on your skin type.
Not every red or purple bump is a cherry angioma. For a new, changing, spontaneously bleeding, or indistinct spot, I recommend assessment by a general practitioner or dermatologist first. Cosmetic light or laser treatment should not delay a necessary diagnosis.
What is a cherry angioma and how do you recognize it?
A cherry angioma, also known as cherry angioma Also known as a senile angioma, it is a common benign accumulation of small blood vessels in the skin. It can look like a flat red dot or a slightly raised red to purple nodule. Cherry angiomas become more common as you get older.
Color and shape alone are not sufficient to reliably diagnose every spot. Read the information blog about cherry angiomas →
When can a cherry angioma be treated?
A confirmed, benign cherry angioma usually does not need to be medically removed. If you find it cosmetically bothersome, we will assess whether light or laser treatment is appropriate.
I assess the location, size, vascular structure, skin type, any sun exposure, and the condition of the skin. If there is any doubt regarding the nature of the spot, a medical assessment is performed first.
IPL or Nd:YAG: which technique do I use?
IPL with vessel filter
IPL emits light pulses that are absorbed by hemoglobin in blood vessels, among other substances. For selected superficial red vascular lesions, this can be a suitable approach.
Multi-Spot Nd:YAG 1064 nm
The Nd:YAG laser emits focused laser light and can be an alternative to IPL, depending on the characteristics of the vessel. This technique requires careful selection of the indication and settings.
I choose the method after assessing the lesion. Both techniques are available, but not every area can be treated equally well or safely with both.
How does the treatment proceed?
Beforehand, I assess the skin and we discuss the goal, the expected reaction, and potential risks. During the treatment, I protect the eyes and treat the selected area specifically with IPL or Nd:YAG.
You may experience a brief sensation of warmth or a stinging feeling. The treatment time depends on the number and size of the spots. The number of sessions required cannot always be predicted in advance.
What can you expect after IPL or laser?
After the treatment, the skin may be temporarily red, swollen, or sensitive. A treated cherry angioma may darken and sometimes form a scab before gradually diminishing. Do not pull off scabs.
Possible adverse reactions include blistering, temporary or long-term pigment changes, scarring, or unsatisfactory results. You receive personalized aftercare advice on cleansing, skincare, sun protection, and avoiding friction or heat.
When is vascular treatment not suitable?
I will postpone or refrain from treatment in the event of, among other things, an unclear diagnosis, active infection or damage in the treatment area, recent sun exposure or self-tanner, certain photosensitizing medication, and other circumstances that increase the risk of complications.
Highly pigmented skin may require a different assessment due to the risk of pigment changes. We discuss health, medication, skin type, and previous reactions during the intake.
What is the difference between a spider nevus and a venous lake?
A spider nevus often has a central red dot with fine vascular branching. A venous lake It is usually blue-purple and occurs, for example, on the lip. A cherry angioma usually looks like a single red to purple vascular spot or nodule.
Because other skin conditions can resemble this, an accurate diagnosis is more important than the choice of device. Also view the RED overview of redness and vascular problems.
How much does it cost to remove a cherry angioma?
The price depends on the number of spots, the size, and the chosen treatment. During the consultation, I will discuss the appropriate approach and the costs in advance. Cosmetic treatments are not automatically reimbursed by health insurance.
Scientific substantiation and further information
Various methods are used to cosmetically remove benign cherry angiomas, including vascular lasers and other dermatological techniques. The choice depends on the characteristics of the lesion and experience with the device in question.
